    Glass Pool Fencing Haberfield

Glass pool fencing in Haberfield, Inner West.

    Local Expertise

    Haberfield

Haberfield is Australia’s first garden suburb. Richard Stanton and W. H. Nicholls laid it out from 1901 as separate houses on garden lots, with street trees and single storey cottages. Separate houses are still the common form.

A low front fence leaves a long view of the garden and the house. The pool fence is not that front fence. It belongs at the rear.

The street fence stays low and open

The Haberfield Heritage Conservation Area keeps the single storey look of those streets. New front fences, and side fences inside the front setback, are timber joinery of simple design, up to 1.2m in height. A high brick wall on the front alignment is not the fence these streets use.

Swimming pool safety fencing must not be visible from a public place, so the barrier sits at the rear, not on the footpath. Frameless glass fixed at the base suits that rear yard. The finished fence comes with its compliance paperwork.

A pool at the rear, sized for the garden

Pools are to be at the rear, sized so an adequate garden setting remains. The original gardens were laid out with the house: a path, beds, and a lawn seen through the front fence.

A privacy screen in powder-coated aluminium or frosted glass can shut a side path past the building line. The panels around the pool remain the barrier.

Planted ground and the pool shell

If the pool is part of work on the house, the council’s note says the development must maintain a landscaped area, and that the house must keep its single storey appearance. Landscaped area means the part of the site used for growing plants, grasses and trees. It does not include a building, a structure or a hard paved area, and the note gives a swimming pool as an example of a structure.

We plan the glass at the rear, clear of the street trees. The pool shell is a structure, so it sits outside that planted ground. That keeps the single storey garden as the view from the street.
